The original Assassin’s Creed game broke all kinds of record as it rapidly became Ubisoft’s iconic franchise and at the time, pushed the limits of gaming technology. However, since its release in 2006, the game hasn’t aged well, with numerous other titles released since. Although, despite the age of the game, many Assassin’s Creed fans, myself included, are eager to see the game return.
So, will we ever see Assassin’s Creed remastered for the new generation of consoles, the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S? Well, anything is possible, especially, as this is the game that started the Assassin’s Creed franchise. This is a franchise that has had over 155 million copies of their various titles sold world-wide prior to 2020, a live-action movie, novels, comics and an upcoming Netflix series based on the Assassin’s Creed universe since the first game’s release in 2006.
Furthermore, almost every title prior to Assassin’s Creed: Unity, except Assassin’s Creed, has been remastered for the newer consoles of the previous generation. It’s strange that Assassin’s Creed hasn’t joined them, especially, on the franchises 10th anniversary a couple of years ago. Instead, to celebrate the occasion, Ubisoft released the Ezio Collection.
However, for Ubisoft to release a new updated version of the original Assassin’s Creed, a simple Instagram filtered version of the game probably wouldn’t be enough. Remember, the first Assassin’s Creed’s map was small when compared to the games of present-day and the actual gameplay was very repetitive. Players had to basically complete the same handful of assassinations in multiple cities and most of the times, the characters you executed were essentially the same person you killed in the previous city.
This wasn’t a major issue at the time but when compared to today’s standards of gaming, that probably won’t cut it as acceptable. In addition, the game will have to have something added to it to make it more exciting than simply having better graphics. Remember, there weren’t DLC’s back then but that doesn’t mean there can’t be any now. For this game to actually be remastered, it will likely need additional content added to it as well. Ubisoft could even add the events of Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles, a game based on the events leading up to the original game exclusive to Nintendo DS.
We must also take into account that players can now play the original Assassin’s Creed on the new consoles already and even on the previous Xbox One. Therefore, without additional content, as well as remastered graphics, there are little reasons to purchase the game. Ubisoft must know this and it’s likely why they haven’t worked on the project, as it might be too much work for too little reward. However, that doesn’t mean that we won’t still see a remastered version in the future.
