SuperCoach 2023 POD Watch: Darcy Macpherson

This one is not a pick for the faint-hearted but if you’re looking for a point of difference, I can almost guarantee you, that you will not see many opponents with Darcy Macpherson lining up against you. Macpherson has not been mentioned in SuperCoach circles for some time but he is slowly building his way into relevance, and he is someone that can make you a bit of money, and possibly perform consistently.

Currently, Macpherson’s BE is 24 and he’s priced at $342,200 after the round 3 price rise. The 25-year-old’s projected score is 72 and he’s expected to jump up by another $22,000 this week. Previously the Sun’s defender’s best season came in 2019 when he averaged 81.7 SuperCoach points, and came third in Gold Coast’s Best & Fairest.

However, since then, the DDP DEF/FWD fell out of favour and played minimally in 2020, 2021 & 2022. Although, it seems times have changed and Macpherson’s form has returned to what it was in 2019. Macpherson is averaging 82.7 points in his first three games this season, scoring 76, 74 and 98 against Sydney, Essendon and Geelong. This included games of 22 disposals and 5 marks against Sydney, 18 disposals and 5 marks over the Dons and a team-high, 24 disposals and 9 marks versus the Cats.

Performances like this are securing Macpherson’s position in the side, with no real missing defenders to challenge his spot. Currently, the 174cm defender is in only 0.3% of sides, which makes him a super POD if he can continue performing at this level. Again, this pick is for the coaches that like a little risk, are happy with their side and want something a little different, as this pick can pay off but it can also be a failure of a selection as well.
