Now, look, you don’t necessarily need to watch these shows in order to understand the Assassins Creed Valhalla story but these shows will give you a different perspective of the game. This historically based TV shows will give you a basic historical background of the time and characters, albeit with a little extra drama as well. This means as you play the game, you will recognise events and people, which will make the hidden organisations in the Assassins and the Templar’s plans more entertaining. The best part is, both TV series have recently released their latest seasons this year, with plans for more still to come so, you’ll be enjoying these shows for some time yet.
- The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom puts you right in the time period of when the game will be set, as the Assassins Creed Valhalla trailer confirmed that King Alfred The Great is in charge. The Last Kingdom will give you a glimpse of famous British champions and historical events such as Alfred and his grandson Athelstan. It will also introduce some of the sons of Ragnar, as well as many other great Vikings and the way they lived. Do remember though, the TV show is based on fiction novels, which are then based on historical event so, there are some differences between these events and actual events. For example, the TV show will focus more on a man named Uthred, who most likely will not play a vital part in Assassins Creed Valhalla. The Last Kingdom has been going strong since 2015 and after watching season 4 last week, it isn’t slowing down.

2. Vikings

Season 1 to 4 of Vikings were incredible but everything after that I have to admit wasn’t really the best. However, in saying that, this show is definitely worth the watch. Vikings is set in the time before the new Assassins Creed game but will likely showcase Vikings and English nobles who will either feature in the game still or at least be mentioned and be important to the story. It will be good to know who Ragnar Lothbrok, Ivar The Boneless, Bjorn Ironside, Lagatha and Ubba are before playing the game. Not all of these characters will feature in the game and I won’t spoil it for you as to why but some should surely make an appearance or two. Vikings first aired in 2013 and will be finishing with its next seasonal instalment. However, the program has been renewed with a spin-off series also titled Valhalla, with production for that starting after the final season of Vikings airs.

3. Ragnarok

This one now isn’t historically set but Ragbarok does follow the story of a young boy who is the embodiment of Thor, which means you should learn a thing or two about Norse mythology. The series premiered on Netflix in January this year and has been renewed for a second season. The show has done well in reviews and is very different to the two shows above but once again, with only one season so far, it will be a quick watch and a quick lesson on some Norse Gods and their powers.

4. Knighfall

Now, before you history fans implode, I am completely aware that this TV series is set in France and roughly 250 years after the events that Assassins Creed Valhalla will be set in. However, this show will give you an insight into the history of the Templars and Crusaders. Yes, this Crusade is set after the ones in the Dar Ages but once again, we will likely see some Crusaders in the game, as there were still Crusades happening during the time Assassins Creed Valhalla was set. Not only that but also some knowledge on the Templar’s, which all Assassins Creed fans will agree with are vital to the story and also, another angle on the events of the original Assassins Creed game. Yes, this show won’t help you learn more about the Viking but it will teach you more about the Crusades and Templars as I mentioned before, which is just as important and at a minimum, will kill some time while you wait for the game’s release. Thus far, Knightfall has two seasons with its first being released in 2017.
