Assassin’s Creed Mirage: Which Historical People Will We Meet?

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be based in the 9th century in the city of Baghdad, at the time that it was the largest city in the world, with a population of about 1 million. We have already met the main character, Basim Ibn Ishaq, in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and numerous other historical figures. However, we will not talk of any of them, as all of them have already been seen in the Assassin’s Creed universe.

Who I am interested in are the people we are yet to meet. Edward The Elder is the eldest son of Alfred The Great and the future king of England. Though, I doubt England will play a part in this upcoming Assassin’s Creed game.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Map

Baghdad is located close to Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Greece and Turkey, just to name a few locations. Many of these locations we have already visited in the original Assassin’s Creed, Assassins’s Creed 2, Assassins’s Creed Revelations, Assassins’s Creed Odyssey and Assassins’s Creed Origins. I would be very surprised if the city of Baghdad is the only location that we will visit and I assume that these neighbouring cities will be visitable.

This is a time just before the Crusades began and the Ottoman Empire was centuries away from controlling the region. The Byzantine Empire, the eastern survivor of the Roman Empire, reined strongly powerhouse of the region in very close proximity to the game setting. The Byzantine Empire is a name that we, in today’s society, use to describe the Eastern survival of the Roman Empire after it’s fall in Europe. However, The Byzantine’s very much considered themselves as the Roman Empire, despite losing control in Italy.

The man in charge of the Empire was Basil I, known as the Macedonian. He was a Byzantine Emperor who reigned from 867 to 886, the time period which Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was set during. Born a simple peasant in Macedonia, he rose in the Imperial court.

Baghdad itself was founded in 762 as the capital of the Abbasid dynasty of caliphs, and for the next 500 years, it was the most significant cultural centre of Arab and Islamic civilization and one of the greatest cities in the world, until it was conquered by the Mongol’s in 1258. The Round City was partially ruined during the siege of 812–813, which is only a few decades before the game’s set time period, when caliph Al-Amin was killed by his brother, who then became the new caliph. It never fully recovered and its walls were completely destroyed by 912. This means that the city’s famous walls should still be visible, and damaged but still standing in Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

In Jerusalem, this was a time when the Patriarch Elias III, corresponded with European rulers asking for financial donations, including Holy Roman Emperor and King of West Francia Charles the Fat and Alfred the Great of England, who we mentioned earlier. Elias III was the Patriarch of Jerusalem from about 879 to 907 and he was a descendant of the family of Mansur ibn Sarjun, the grandfather of John of Damascus.

Also, yes, I did just mention The Holy Roman Empire, which ruled over much of western and central Europe from the 9th century to the 19th century. The empire was controlled by Charles III, also known as Charles the Fat., during this period of time. Charles III was a great-grandson of Charlemagne. Yes, that Charlemagne, also known as Charles I.
