Ardacious, a Brisbane-based technology company in Australia, showcased its flagship product, Ardent Roleplay, at PAX Australia Melbourne over the weekend. It’s here where I met Dr Ralf Muhlberger, the CEO of Ardacious, and tested the app for myself.

Ardent Roleplay allows players to bring tabletop and card games to life. The app adds dynamic animated augmented reality 3D scenery, creatures and props to the game. The games available thus far on the app are Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu.

However, Dr Muhlberger explained that the program can be easily transferable to other games as well. There were a plethora of card games players at PAX had an option to compete in. Dragon Ball Super, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Magic of the Gathering and My Hero Academia matches lasted all weekend.

Imagine adding AR creatures to your Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! card game. It would bring an entirely different element to the table. Thus far, Ardent Roleplay doesn’t support these brands but, Dr Muhlberger explained, that the base platform is there if a deal can be struck in the future.

After trying out Arent Roleplay for myself, I quickly realised that this is the future of card gaming and I can’t wait to host an AR card-game tournament with a group of friends.
